Create a Spotify Promo Card

Creating a Spotify Promo Card is really easy and most of it is self-explanatory, but we’ll walk you through the tool anyway.

First of all, go to promocards.byspotify.com. You will be taken to a page where you can choose between ‘artists’ (for music) or ‘podcasters’ (for when you have a podcast on Spotify. Choose ‘artists’ here.

Next you have three options to create a promo card for:

1. Artist. This is your artist-profile, which contains all your releases and playlists. This is the best option if your goal is to get more followers on Spotify.
2. Album. Did you release a new album with multiple tracks, or do you want to highlight an old release? Then this is the best option.
3. Song. Choose a specific track on a release to highlight. Use this option to, for example, highlight one track per week on your social media.

After making your choice you can search for your artist, album or song name. Confirm your selection on the right side of the screen and click ‘customize’ to go to the next step.

Customize

Although the Spotify Promo Cards tool doesn’t have many options to customize the design, you still have a number of choices in color and size. With the slider at the top of the page you can switch between the two modes.

For the background you can choose from five colors that Spotify has chosen for you. Maybe you already noticed, but these colors are based on the colors in your artist picture or cover image! No matter which color you choose, it will always match the style of your release.

Choose one of the colors and click ‘Next’. Now you can choose a format for your Promo Card. Of course you can just go for the format you like best, but also think about where you want to use your Promo Card. Want to put it on Facebook? Then ‘Landscape’ is probably the best option. Instagram? Square of course. And for stories in Snapchat or Instagram ‘Portrait’ is the best choice.

Share

Now there is only one thing left to do: click on the green ‘Share’ button at the bottom of the page to see your creation. You can then share it directly on Twitter or Facebook using the buttons at the bottom of the page. But you can also download it via ‘Download file’ and use it on the social network, or maybe your own website or newsletter, of your choice.

We are very excited about this new Promo Cards tool from Spotify. Of course, you already cloud just share a link to your artist profile or release on social media, or take a screenshot of your release for Instagram. But now it’s easier than ever to create beautiful, matching images to promote your profile or release on Spotify.

First of all, SongKit continues as usual. We work from home and carefully follow the advice of the government. You can continue to upload releases, check your royalties and apply for payouts at any time of the day.

We do notice that the situation in the world, and the fact that a lot of people are sitting at home, leads to a lot more music being made than normal. And that music has to be distributed.

Because of this increase in releases, your distribution, quality check or support answers may take a little longer than you are used to from us. Although we always do everything we can to get your release online as soon as possible, we depend on our partners and stores.

Most new releases without issues will not be affected by this. Delays will mostly be in changes, updates and license requests.

As a distributor, we are very fortunate that we do not experience much inconvenience from the virus in our daily operations. And we hope that, especially during this difficult time for artists, bands, producers and other artists, we can contribute something. Hopefully this situation in which gigs and festivals are cancelled at the same time will lead to more media consumption at home, for example Spotify while working from home, giving independent artists a boost in royalties to be received.

Today the time has finally come: the new version of our SongKit system is online! The new system not only has more features and is faster, but it also gives us a basis to build on over the next ten years.

Although many things have changed under the hood, creating and sending releases and viewing your royalties is still as easy as ever. There are some things that work just a little differently, so we’d like to explain them to you.

Artist Roles

In the past you had to separate several artist names by colon, so for example ‘Artist1:Artist2’. Clumsy, but above all unclear. After all, which role was assigned to which artist?

With the new system this is a thing of the past. When creating a release, or adding a track, you can now specify each artist separately with a corresponding role. Not only can you clearly indicate who the main and featuring artists are, but you can also add extra credits to your release. Think for example of producer or composer.

The artists of your existing releases are transferred as well as possible, but check them before you send a new release.

Royalty reports

Perhaps the most requested feature are better and more comprehensive royalty reports. Where in the past you only had a table with sometimes one sale per line (which resulted in infinitely long lists that couldn’t be read), now we’ll let some clever calculations loose on your royalties.

So now you can see at a glance the total royalties per release, as well as per track. We also show you the ‘units’ (every sales/play is a ‘unit’) so you have a better idea of what your revenues stand for.

And best of all: we make a first step in visualizing your revenues. We show you the stores and countries where your outstanding royalties come from in a pie chart. And you can see the course of your income in a nice line chart. This way, you’ll have a lot of information at a glance about how your music is doing.

And so there are still many small and big things to discover in our new system, and a number of features will be rolled out over the coming months. We are very happy with it, and hope it will be of great use to you. Vandaag is het dan eindelijk zo ver: de nieuwe versie van ons SongKit-systeem staat online! Het nieuwe systeem heeft niet alleen meer functies en is sneller, maar het geeft ons ook een basis om op voort te bouwen de komende tien jaar.

Hoewel er veel dingen onder de motorkap veranderd zijn, is het aanmaken en versturen van releases en het bekijken van je royalties nog steeds even makkelijk. Er zijn wel een aantal dingen die net even anders werken, dus lichten we ze graag even aan je uit.

Artist Roles

In het verleden moest je meerdere artiestnamen scheiden door dubbele punt, dus bijvoorbeeld ‘Artiest1:Artiest2’. Onhandig, maar vooral ook onduidelijk. Want welke rol kreeg welke artiest nou toegewezen?

Met het nieuwe systeem is dat verleden tijd. Je kunt nu bij het aanmaken van een release, of het toevoegen van een track, iedere artiest apart opgeven met een bijbehorende rol. Zo kun je niet alleen duidelijk aangeven wie hoofd- en featuring-artiesten zijn, maar óók kun je zo extra credits toevoegen aan je release. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan producer of composer.

De artiesten van je bestaande releases zijn zo goed mogelijk overgezet, maar check ze even voordat je een nieuwe release verstuurt.

Royalty reports

Misschien wel de meest gevraagde feature zijn betere en uitgebreidere royalty reports. Waar je in het verleden alleen een tabel had met soms één verkoop per lijn (wat resulteerde in oneindig lange lijsten die niet meer te lezen waren), laten we nu een aantal slimme berekeningen los op je royalties.

Zo kun je nu in één oogopslag het totaal aan royalties per release, maar ook per track bekijken. Ook tonen we je de ‘units’ (iedere verkoop/play is een ‘unit’) zodat je meer zicht heb op waar je inkomsten precies voor staan.

En het allermooiste: we maken een eerste stap in het visualiseren van je inkomsten. Zo tonen we de stores en landen waar je openstaande royalties vandaan komen in een pie-chart. Én zie je het verloop van je inkomsten in een mooie lijngrafiek. Zo heb je in één oogopslag meteen veel informatie over hoe je muziek er voor staat.

In de toekomst zullen we nog meer visualisatie- en exportmogelijkheden toevoegen. Stay tuned!

En nog 100 grote en kleine dingen..

En zo zijn er nog heel veel kleine en grote dingen te ontdekken in ons nieuwe systeem, en worden er over de komende maanden nog een aantal features uitgerold. We zijn er heel erg blij mee, en hopen dat je er veel aan zult hebben. We vieren de lancering van ons nieuwe systeem graag samen met je, dus komende week kun je je releases met 30% korting versturen. Zoals we eerder schreven zijn we al een tijdje bezig aan een nieuwe versie van ons songkit-systeem waarmee je je releases aanmaakt, verstuurt naar stores en je royalties bekijkt.

Die royalty reports krijgen misschien wel de grootste update, met info per release, store statistieken en een historie. Die informatie is erg nuttig, want zo kun je precies zien waar bijvoorbeeld je marketing werkt en waar je misschien nog meer kunt investeren. Ook kun je op basis van de historie zien hoe je inkomsten het over langere tijd gezien doen.

We hopen dat deze extra statistieken je helpen nog meer uit je muziek en je distributie te halen en je een beter overzicht geven over hoe je releases er financieel voor staan.

Waar je nu ook bent in je muzikale carrière; voor iedereen is er een volgende stap. Ze bespreekt onder andere het belang van doelen stellen, strategie bepalen en plannen…

27 mei – Workshop A&R – Menno Timmerman
Menno Timmerman (management van o.a Kensington en Ilse De Lange) geeft een workshop A&R (Artist & Repertoire) en legt uit hoe jij jouw artistieke kant zo goed mogelijk kunt afstemmen op de markt.

Popsport

Popsport is het landelijke coachingsprogramma voor jonge, talentvolle muzikanten, bands en producers die verder willen komen met hun eigen muziek. Je krijgt muziekinhoudelijke coaching van professionals, krijgt meer inzicht in de muziekbusiness en hoe je je daarin als artiest, muzikant of band kunt bewegen.
